The Seven Winter Checks Your Motorhome Wishes You’d Done Sooner

Winter is the quiet season for many motorhome owners, but it is also the most critical period for preventative maintenance. Cold temperatures, moisture, inactivity and reduced ventilation can all cause issues that only become apparent when spring arrives often at the worst possible moment.

Carrying out a few essential winter checks can protect your motorhome’s value, reliability and comfort, while avoiding unnecessary repair bills. Below are seven checks every motorhome would thank you for doing early, not late.

1. Damp and water ingress inspection

Damp is the single most expensive and damaging issue a motorhome can suffer. Winter condensation, heavy rain and standing water expose weaknesses in seals, joints and rooflights.

Check internal corners, lockers, roof seams and around windows for signs of moisture, staining or musty smells. Externally, inspect sealant lines for cracking or lifting. Addressing small seal failures early can prevent structural damage that worsens over winter.

Booking a professional damp inspection before winter storage is strongly advised.

2. Battery health and charging systems

Leisure and vehicle batteries deteriorate quickly when left discharged in cold conditions. Many spring breakdowns are caused by batteries that were quietly damaged over winter.

Fully charge all batteries before storage and either disconnect them or connect a suitable maintenance charger. Solar panels can help, but only if the system is working correctly and not shaded.

Check terminals for corrosion and ensure battery compartments remain dry and ventilated.

3. Water system drainage and frost protection

Frozen water systems are a common winter casualty. Pipes, pumps and boilers can crack if water is left inside during freezing temperatures.

Drain the freshwater tank, waste tank, boiler and all pipework fully. Leave taps open in the mid-position and ensure the toilet flush system is also emptied. For added protection, some owners use non-toxic antifreeze specifically designed for motorhome systems.

Never assume a mild winter will be problem-free, a single hard frost is enough to cause damage.

4. Tyres, pressures and load condition

Motorhome tyres can deteriorate even when the vehicle is stationary. Prolonged periods parked on soft ground or with low pressures can cause flat spots and sidewall damage.

Inflate tyres to the correct storage pressure, ideally slightly higher than running pressure, and if possible, move the vehicle periodically. Check tyre age as well as tread depth, tyres older than five to six years may need replacing regardless of mileage. Wheel covers can also help protect against UV and moisture exposure.

5. Ventilation and condensation control

A sealed motorhome is a damp motorhome. Lack of airflow during winter storage encourages condensation, mould growth and unpleasant odours.

Ensure roof vents are left open in their winter ventilation setting and avoid blocking fixed vents. Moisture traps or dehumidifiers can help, but they are not a substitute for proper airflow.

Good ventilation protects soft furnishings, timber structures and electrical systems throughout the colder months.

6. Seals, locks and moving parts

Cold weather causes rubber seals to stiffen and metal components to seize if left untreated. Door seals, locker catches, step mechanisms and awning parts are particularly vulnerable.

Clean and lightly lubricate locks, hinges and exposed metal parts. Treat rubber seals with a suitable conditioner to prevent cracking and sticking.

These small actions make a noticeable difference when you come to use the motorhome again.

7. Insurance, paperwork and cover checks

Winter is an ideal time to review insurance cover, breakdown policies and service schedules. Confirm that your policy covers winter storage locations and check any conditions relating to security or movement.

If using a motorhome cover, ensure it is breathable and properly secured to avoid paint or seal damage. Avoid plastic or non-breathable covers that trap moisture.

Finally, note when your next habitation check or service is due and book ahead to avoid spring backlogs.

A final word before winter sets in

Most winter motorhome problems are not caused by extreme weather, but by small oversights that compound over time. A few hours spent on preventative checks can save weeks of frustration and significant expense later.

If you are unsure about any aspect of winter preparation, the team at Chelston Motorhomes can provide professional inspections, servicing and expert advice to ensure your motorhome is protected throughout the colder months and ready to go when touring season returns.
