How to tour around Europe in your motorhome

Europe. A captivating continent teeming with rich cultural life and breathtaking scenery across several diverse countries. It beckons holiday makers to embark on an unforgettable journey. While hotels usually always offer comfort, touring Europe in a campervan or motorhome allows you to be master of your own destiny. You can set your own pace and truly immerse yourself in the European experience. You should always do your research (using the internet) and, if possible, establish a rough schedule before you set off. Check that you have all of the right documentation appropriate to each country you intend to visit. It’s essential to make sure that you are fully prepared for every eventuality. For example, in France you are legally obliged to pay speeding fines or documentation violations on the spot, with no argument.

You must have three months or more remaining on your passport (which must have been issued within the past ten years) at the date of your departure back from Europe. From last November (2023) all visa-free travellers who make trips to EU countries will need to register online with the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. If you are touring in a campervan or European motorhome in Europe, a UK driving licence is a requirement as this allows you to drive in all EU countries. If the licence was issued in Jersey, Gibraltar, Guernsey or the Isle of Man then you will also need to obtain an International Driving Permit.

Additionally, you must affix a UK sticker on the rear of your campervan or motorhome (unless your vehicle displays a Union Jack on the number plates). Even with the new-style number plates, a UK sticker is required in Spain.

GHIC or EHIC (Global or European Health Insurance Card): While not a legal requirement, acquiring this card will provide access to medically necessary state-provided healthcare in EU countries. In other words, healthcare that cannot reasonably wait until you come back to the UK. This card is free, and you can apply for it through the NHS website.

Travel insurance and Europe motorhome / campervan breakdown cover: Though not mandatory, investing in insurance ensures coverage in case of vehicle issues during European travels.

Before hitting the road, you should spend some time ensuring that your motorhome is roadworthy by conducting checks and necessary maintenance. Verify the tyre pressures are correct, that there is functionality of brake and indicator lights, and the efficiency of water and gas systems. Engaging a professional mechanic to inspect the engine could be helpful to address current issues or spot potential problems in advance.

Devote some time to planning your route through the countries that you intend to visit, as doing so will help you be prepared for factors such as toll roads. Research the best points at which to stop for refuelling and to take some rest along the way. If possible, familiarise yourself with any parking regulations for motorhomes at the various locations along your route. Numerous websites provide guidance on suitable parking and overnight stays. There are plenty of websites which can provide the right information regarding parking and overnight stays etc.

During your planning phase you should also consider more domestic things to ensure you have enough food, the right clothing and bedding etc. If you intend to explore the areas you will be stopping at by bicycle then make sure you have a puncture repair kit, cycle helmet and so on. It’s also smart to take spares of lightbulbs, toilet roll, toothpaste etc.

Embracing the diverse beauty of Europe, whether you are travelling in France, Spain, Holland, Germany or further east can be truly exhilarating. Encountering these places will free your spirit and possibly even rejuvenate your whole outlook on life. Be aware, though, that the freedom generated by time on the road doesn’t mean approaching your trip in a completely ad hoc fashion. You need to undertake some sensible planning as this is the key to avoiding pitfalls. Be prepared – and be prepared to enjoy yourself!
