Our guide to understanding the basics of motorhome vehicle tax

By Wayne Kavanagh Posted: 23/09/24 (Last updated 10 months ago)

You’ve picked and paid for your new motorhome from Chelston, so what else do you need to do before setting off on your debut journey? Motorhome ownership also comes with responsibilities, including the need to pay vehicle tax, officially known as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For motorhome owners, understanding vehicle tax is crucial – not only to stay legal but also to know how it affects the running costs of your vehicle. In this guide, we’ll cover why vehicle tax is required, how much you can expect to pay in 2024, and what could happen if you neglect this important responsibility.

Why is vehicle tax needed?

Vehicle tax is the way that UK vehicle owners contribute indirectly (albeit compulsorily) to the continued maintenance and improvement of the country’s road network.

Due to their size and weight, motorhomes place a significant strain on the roads and contribute to wear and tear on surfaces. This is why vehicle tax is even more critical and is why motorhome owners pay higher vehicle tax than smaller, lighter vehicles.

What is the vehicle tax on a new motorhome?

The amount of vehicle tax a UK motorhome owner needs to pay for their vehicle depends on a few key factors including the age, weight and CO2 emissions of the vehicle.

  • Weight: An important weight threshold is 3,500kg. Vehicles with a gross or maximum below this limit are classified as private light goods vehicles and they’re subject to the vehicle tax in that classification. In contrast, motorhomes with a gross or maximum weight exceeding 3,500kg are categorised as private heavy goods vehicles and are subject to vehicle tax in line with that classification.
  • Engine: The engine size of motorhomes also affects the vehicle tax. If it’s 1,549cc or less then the vehicle tax is lower compared to vehicles which have an engine size above 1,549cc.
What happens if you don’t pay vehicle tax?

Failure to pay vehicle tax for your motorhome will lead to serious consequences. The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) keeps a close eye on vehicles that are taxed, and there are a series of penalties for non-compliance.

  • Fines: If you’re caught driving a motorhome without having applied for and paid vehicle tax, you can be fined a sum up to £1,000. The police use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to identify untaxed vehicles on the road.
  • Clamping: The DVLA has the authority to clamp (or even tow) your motorhome if it’s found untaxed on a public road. If this happens, you will have to pay a hefty fee along with the overdue vehicle tax before they will release your vehicle back to you.
  • Legals: Continued failure to pay vehicle tax may even lead to legal action, including prosecution. In the most extreme cases you might even find that your vehicle could be permanently impounded – or even scrapped.

Vehicle tax is a legal requirement for all motorhomes, whether they’re in regular use or stored for part of the year. If your vehicle is off the road, you must ‘SORN it’ (i.e. apply for Statutory Off-Road Notification) to avoid the potential penalties.

How to pay your motorhome vehicle tax

Make sure you renew your vehicle tax before it expires to avoid any complications. Paying your motorhome vehicle tax is actually a straightforward process, and you can pay it in several ways.

  • Online: The quickest method to apply for and pay your vehicle tax is through the government’s website. You can easily pay using a debit or credit card.
  • Direct Debit: You can set up a direct debit to pay your vehicle tax annually, biannually or monthly. Doing so using this method can help you spread the cost into manageable payments.
  • Post Office: Many post offices provide simple vehicle tax payment services.
Other financial necessities for motorhome owners

While vehicle tax is an important cost to be managed by motorhome owners, it’s not the only financial responsibility. There are other essential costs to consider.

  • Insurance: Just like with cars and motorbikes, insurance is mandatory for motorhomes and ensures that your vehicle is covered for theft, damage, and accidents. The cost varies depending on factors including your vehicle’s age and size, and your driving history.
  • MOT / Servicing: Like any other vehicle, motorhomes over three years old require an annual MOT to ensure they’re roadworthy. As well as your own regimen of upkeep, regular servicing is also highly recommended so that you can ensure the mechanics (etc) of your motorhome remain in good working condition – and, of course, there is a cost involved as professionals are required.
  • Fuel: Motorhomes are much larger and heavier than cars, and therefore tend to use more fuel. Make sure you factor in fuel costs to your budgets, especially if you plan to travel extensively.

By having an understanding of the categories, rates and penalties for non-payment of your motorhome vehicle tax, you’ll ensure you stay in line with the law and avoid unnecessary problems including fines. In addition to vehicle tax, remember to budget for insurance, MOTs and other running costs such as fuel so that you can enjoy your motorhome adventures to the max!
